• The need for awareness.
• Brief overview of course offered and equipment to be used.
• Sign up after school: numbers will be limited to 8-10 children per session dependant on initial tested ability.
The program will be: 10 one hour sessions in a 5 week period at a designated school location, offering a very controlled riding environment.
None of these sessions will be held on any road.
• Sessions 1-4: will review bicycle components and how to check your bicycle is safe to ride, introduce basic riding skills (such as: let your ears be eyes too, straight line, how to scan ahead and look over shoulder before turning) combining hand signals with safe bike handling and interpreting traffic related signs.
• Sessions 5-8: developing obstacle skills (cones, curbs, when to dismount), safe intersection crossing simulations, how to merge with traffic, pedestrian awareness.
• Session 9: specialty drills (one hand steering, stopping without brakes).
• Session 10: Graduation test and certificate of completion.
The BSAFE Program will have a very simple yet strict code of conduct. The students will be expected to adhere to these conditions:
1. Be respectful to oneself and others at all times.
2. Helmet use will be mandatory.
3. Immediately obey verbal commands from instructor.
There will be one warning given.
The second infraction and the student will be dismissed from the session.
The student may return for the next scheduled session.
Three dismissals and the student will NOT be allowed to return.
