BSAFE Launches In BVI At Althea Scatliffe School

The BSAFE (Bicycle Safety Awareness For Everyone) programme started at the Althea Scatcliffe School today with twenty children attending the first two lessons.  Nationally recognized cyclist Chris Ghiorse has developed the scheme and will be running BSAFE to help children build cycling skills and safety awareness for when they venture onto BVI roads.  Caribbean Alliance Insurance and their BVI agents, Caribbean Insurers Limited, are title sponsors of BSAFE.

BSAFE is aimed at 8-10 year olds and will run in 10 one-hour sessions over a five-week period. The fourteen public schools on Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Anegada will benefit from the programme which will run from now until the end of May 2009.

Chris Ghiorse said: “The first wide ranging freedom a child will have is often experienced on a bicycle.  Children will frequently face situations that are beyond their level of road safety understanding.  BSAFE is a program that will develop a healthier lifestyle and influence the choices children face when venturing out on their own.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Caribbean Alliance Insurance and Caribbean Insurers for their support.  Without it, BSAFE would not be possible and 400 children of the BVI would not be able to benefit from such an important programme.”
“As an insurance agent we feel it is our community duty to offer guidance in all matters concerning health and safety.  This will make everyone in the community prosper,” said Brian Jermyn of Caribbean Insurers Limited. “Exercise helps to create a healthy lifestyle.  Being able to help children take a step in this direction safely through a bicycle safety program, works not only to the child’s benefit, but also to the community’s.  Our island is very small and being able to influence children’s choices on safety decisions in a manner that is fun and health oriented is a win–win situation.”
Gregory Manners of Caribbean Alliance Insurance based in Antigua added: “BSAFE incorporates all of the elements to bring children to another level of awareness that will influence their life choices and hopefully make them more responsible, conscientious adults.  One of the tag lines for BSAFE is ‘Influence tomorrow’s drivers, today.’ As an insurer, better drivers means safer, more secure roads.

“Caribbean Insurers has always been a leader in corporate social responsibility and giving back to the BVI community and we are pleased to partner with them in supporting this program.”

BSAFE is fully supported by Hon. Andrew A Fahie, Minister Of Education and Culture, and the Ministry Of Education and Culture.  The Minister said: “I welcome the BSAFE programme and the fact that a private enterprise has stepped up to help with the education and growth of our children.  Extra-curricular activities are important for the development and safety of our children in a number of ways.  Learning road safety in a controlled, fun, healthy and disciplined environment can only be a benefit to the BVI as a whole.”

The BSAFE programme is free for each public school child.  They will receive a helmet and certificate upon completion of the course.   The operating cost for each child is $140 for the 10 lessons and BSAFE is encouraging BVI companies to provide scholarships.  To date, the Ministry Of Education, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Harneys, International Motors, KennyTees and Tropical Shipping are supporting the programme with scholarships.

Mr. Gordon Callender, Principal of Althea Scatliffe Secondary School, was delighted that his school had been chosen as the first in the programme. “I’ve been a big supporter of this programme since Chris came to me with idea.  Anything we can do help our children grow can only be good. I see the BSAFE programme as a firm step in the right direction.”
