Learning How to Ride Program
Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 8:24PM In order to take part in the BSAFE program a student needs to be able to start riding on their own and be able to at least balance and control the bike enough to get around 1 cone and back and show a basic understanding of the need to stop.
The demand to take part in the BSAFE program is immense. Althea Scatliffe has close to 130 students alone who want to ride. Some of the students who signed up were not able to meet the minimum requirements so I decided it was my responsibility to provide an extra class just for them so that they can enter the BSAFE program at a later date. This is a luxury I do not have with the smaller schools.
The photo below shows my first Learn to Ride group and I am very happy to say that after only 2 classes (~4 hours total), 3 students are at a level to get into the program in January and the other 2 are only going to need the next session to crack that magic solo ride.
It is very rewarding and a lot of fun watching someone who can barely pedal (let alone balance) achieve those first few feet solo...then there is no stopping them...once you learn it really is just like riding a bike...YOU NEVER FORGET
Teaching students to ride is so hands on, sadly I only have the posed photo...it would be great to have had someone filming because of how quickly kids can learn and adapt to their new found skill.
5 students from Althea Scatliffe looking forward to the BSAFE program once they can ride well enough to take part.
