Brief comments from the director Chris Ghiorse
Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 9:41AM I have successfully brought 8 BSAFE classes to completion thanks to the generous sponsors that have supported this program from its creation. They are all listed here on the website and if you are reading this sentence take a moment to think about their involvement and whether you want to follow in their footsteps.
I can not emphasize enough the need for these kids to learn basic bike handling skills. It is not just about riding a bicycle…I challenge these kids to make their own judgment calls when faced with scenarios that I come up with. Interestingly the students who are generally the most skilled at the start are the ones that make some of the most dangerous mistakes.
When I think along these lines I wonder if I need to bring the program to an even younger age group to try and get them to think about safety first. I want to see these kids on bikes. Some can do “tricks” that I can’t, but when I throw in a simple stop command they are often unable to stop in way that would have kept them out from underneath a car!
I feel after a few examples of these sorts of surprises that even these students manage to think a bit more about what they are doing.
I now have 3 weeks before the next classes start and I will be improving some of the routines I have established and I look forward to the New Year.
Thanks for reading…Chris Ghiorse.

Chris,
This looks like a fantastic program that we should have here in Bermuda. You have done a great job with this and surely every country needs this for junior cycling development.
