The school year is well underway and BSAFE has organized its first classes for the year with Althea Scatliffe.
BSAFE (Bicycle Safety Awareness For Everyone) is a free after school bicycle education program designed to build awareness of a student’s riding environment. The program targets class three aged children because statistically children tend to have more bicycle related mishaps when they get a little older. The program is being conducted with the kind permission from Wickhams Cay Development Authority on the Festival Ground in Road Town.
“I want to make my students aware of some of the pitfalls cycling can throw at you”, said Chris Ghiorse, director of BSAFE. “I believe, by showing them potential hazards in a controlled and safe environment that they will be better prepared for some of the surprises we all face on a daily basis whether commuting by motor vehicle, walking or riding.”
BSAFE will be starting next month at Francis Lettsome Primary and continue with Althea Scatliffe Primary. “Coordinating the sign up of students is always a challenge since I can only work with 10 children at a time”, said Chris, “so this year I am going to try and get the BSAFE schedule of schools up on community bulletin boards to see if that helps parents and guardians organize their busy lives. Keep an eye and ear open for your child’s school if you want them to take part”
This year has been made possible by the incredible support of the Ministry of Education as title sponsors. Burke’s Garage, Caribbean Alliance Insurance and their agents Caribbean Insurers are major supporters with Ogier and PricewaterhouseCoopers rounding out the support of BSAFE.
