BSAFE Graduates Speak Out
Monday, May 18, 2009 at 8:02PM Recent BSAFE graduates from the Ebenezer Thomas, Alexandrina Maduro and Isabella Morris Primary Schools were asked about what they felt was the most important thing they learned during the BSAFE course they have just completed.
Ryan Adams of Ebenezer Thomas said, “Learning how to ride one handed to show where you are going”.
Elian Thomas of Isabella Morris said, “Riding over the bumps in control”.
The majority of students agreed that the one hand drills are the hardest and most important for safety.
Kimberly Jack of Alexandrina Maduro said it best for all the students this year when she said quite simply, “I can ride my bike better now”.
Over 200 students have completed the BSAFE level one program. When prompted most students admit that putting on their helmet is easy to do once it has been adjusted correctly.
“A good sign for me concerning helmet use is that when we finish the course about half the students wander off still wearing their helmet”, said Chris Ghiorse director of BSAFE. “What they have yet to realize, are that all the bicycle drills I have put them through are teaching them to anticipate and deal with challenges safely before they become a problem.”
