Buzzbee Youth Racing Series Event 2 Results
Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 6:46PM On Saturday March 27th under bright and sunny skies, BSAFE hosted the 2nd event of the Buzzbee Youth Bicycle Racing Series. 49 competitors showed up to try their skill and speed on the HLSCC grounds. This is a four event points series open to all age groups up to 16 years old. The overall age group winners of the series will win a BMX bicycle worth over $400.
“The competition was very exciting to watch. The conditions were fast and the bottom of the course had riders learning about the results of carrying too much speed into a corner,” said Chris Ghiorse, race director of the event. “As always I am worried about how technical I should make a race course for competitors new to the sport and Saturday’s event was just about the limit for many of the riders at the moment. I think many riders will have learned a few things about where and how to get through turns safely at speed, which will enable me to offer more technical challenges for these riders at future events.”
“It is still a little early in the series to tell who will be the winners at the end of it all. But a few names are emerging as consistently at the front in all the age groups. The 8-10 boys age group with 22 riders was very competitive and provided the entertainment for the day. We needed 10 races to decide the overall winner. The biggest growth was in the under 8 age group which had 8 riders entered up from 3 at the first event, they are having fun and to me that is the most important part. The great thing about this series is that I can see how some of the riders in various age groups have huge potential for the sport. Right now it is too early to be too serious, so if I can keep them having fun and at the same time they stay keen about the competitive side, then when they are a little older I can slot them into more serious training programs.”
The Buzzbee Youth Racing Series is an introductory challenge to all riders of all abilities and ages. There have been over 70 different riders in the first 2 events. The next event is on May 22nd and the final is on July 10th. These free events are open to everyone at any time. The only requirements are that you are able to ride and you are under 17.
This series is looking for sponsorship and at present is only made possible by the support of the BSAFE program and its volunteers. BSAFE exists through the title sponsorship from Hon. Andrew A. Fahie and the Ministry of Education, and the major supporters Caribbean Alliance and their agents Caribbean Insurers, Burke’s Garage, Ogier and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The Buzzbee event owes thanks to many, and is grateful to HLSCC for allowing the event to take place on their field.
The volunteers were numerous. DJ Outlaw donated his super sound system for the call to the line and to fill in pauses with his music, Nicole Charles and Philomena Robertson kept all the points and heats organized aided at the finish line by Peter Leblanc, Kay Reddy and numerous Rotaractors who also filled in with many course marshal duties and sign in. Ken Guiste and his 2 assistant soccer coaches helped with the set up of the course. Yael and Gaby Gordon-Fox, Adrian Dale, Clyde Rhymer, Colen Corea and Mary Findley filled in forms and pinned numbers on the riders. Brian Jermyn and 2 of his CIL crew were on hand to help monitor water supplies and warm-up areas. Darel Christopher Jr. and head starting judge Orano Andrews kept the call to line in order during the event. The Red Cross was ever present and thankfully only was called on for advice in one crash.
The results below reflect the place in this event and the overall points gathered for this event that will be applied to the series total.
