On Saturday July 10th, BSAFE hosted the 4th and final event of the Buzzbee Youth Bicycle Racing Series. It was a beautifully sunny day and 24 competitors showed up to try their skill and speed on the HLSCC campus. Since this was the final event of the series many of the riders present were there to confirm their overall placing in order to ensure they would win the much coveted BMX bike being awarded to the winners of each category.
“As an added incentive to show up and race each rider’s name was entered to make them eligible for a bike drawn at the end of the awards,” said Chris Ghiorse the Buzzbee race director. “With school being out I felt I might not see as many riders present since I know a few regulars were already away for the summer.”
With the fewer number riders present, 18 boys and 6 girls, the races were combined such that all the boys raced in 2 groups and the girls in one. There were 5 heats for each group and the resulting competition between the age groups within these heats was a lot of fun to watch. “Watching the level of competition go up on this day has me rethinking the age group lines for next season,” said Chris. “I think the younger riders learned a lot today by being mixed with slightly older age group riders so I think next year I will do this from time to time.”
The final for the top ten boys on the day was very competitive, with the overall winner Amari Maduro showing the biggest improvement of all the competitors since the start of the series in January.
Jomar Balcombe and Jhe’Quan Mitcham managed to hang on to their top spots despite ever increasing competition. Jomar won by 4 points over the late surging Amari.
The girls’ races saw exciting racing between Nakisha Savory and Akira Philip separated this year in age groups because of their birth dates, but next season will see them riding head to head more often. They each won their respective age groups and Nakisha narrowly won over Akira on the day.
The Buzzbee event owes thanks to many, and is grateful to HLSCC for allowing the event to take place on their field.
The volunteers were numerous. DJ Outlaw donated his super sound system for the call to the line and to fill in pauses with his music. Rotaract had a huge contingent and helped Nicole Charles keep all the points and heats organized at the finish line and on the judges table Mary Findley, Llyod Black, Ed and Sharon Barber filled in forms and pinned numbers on. Orano Andrews and Ray Wearmouth kept the call to line in order during the event. The Red Cross was ever present and thankfully was not needed.
Over $3000 in prizes were given away and presented by Brian Jermyn of Caribbean Insurers representing Caribbean Alliance Insurance. The top rider from each age group walked away with a brand new BMX bike package worth over $400.
The special raffled BMX bike was awarded to Laresha Martin who earlier in the day was told she would at least win a helmet today for her performances in the races. Laresha’s response was “Yeah but I don’t have a bike.” Fate it seems smiled on her this day.
The Buzzbee Racing Series was only made possible by the support of the BSAFE program and its volunteers. BSAFE exists through the title sponsorship from Hon. Andrew A. Fahie and the Ministry of Education, and the major supporters Caribbean Alliance and their agents Caribbean Insurers, Burke’s Garage, Ogier and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
